AA car data check. According to the website, one in three cars has a hidden past. To make sure you are not buying a stolen or written off car, you might like to have the car's history checked out first. You need to enter the vehicle registration number and for a thorough check you will also need the mileage and the vehicle identification number (VIN). This is a unique 17 digit number which is on all vehicles built after 1981. (A VIN can usually be found on title documents and also on or in the car itself - check the dashboard, left hand wheel arch, firewall, steering column, drivers door or often under the bonnet).
