The air is fresh with the smell of sea air. The town ever so slightly running-down. Picture a seedy seaside arcade. It's the late 70s. Lets take a look inside ... flashing fruit machines, complex pinball, inaccurate rifles with barrels that curve gracefully, yes every cheap and nasty machine is here to extract your hard earned holiday money. Standing proud amongst these mechanical muggers is the Air Hockey table.

So simple but great fun to play and great value. Thousands of tiny holes cover the table, each blasting out a tiny air-stream. The puck glides across the table to create the fastest table top game in the world. Using hand-held, circular "mallets", players attempt to knock the puck into their opponent's goal slot. Brilliantly simple, Brilliant fun.

The start

Ice hockey enthusiast Bob Lemieux dreamed up the sport of air-hockey in the USA in November 1972, for billiards manufacturers Brunswick. The craze spread to the UK and is now Worldwide. The game prospered through the rest of the 70s, as other manufacturers began producing tables and equipment. With the coming of the video game era in the late 70s Air Hockey suffered a bit of a setback. It was simple maths, the Air Hockey table took up too much space. But video games went out of fashion a bit in the mid-80s and Air Hockey staged a comeback. Arcade owners knew that Air Hockey, still drew the same faithful following it always had. The Video games were less predicatable. Believe it or not there are professional organizations and tournaments for Air Hockey. The United States Air-Table-Hockey Association (USAA), was founded in 1975, and is recognized as the world-wide sanctioning body for the sport. The USAA has conducted 35 National/World Championships in air-hockey, beginning with the first USAA Nationals in June, 1978.
