Cotswold Chess Congress 2003 Prelimanary Report
by Graham Brown

This year we had to move from Archway school which was a good venue. But luckily we found an even better one ... St Edwards School - thanks to the likes of Chris Mattos and John Wheeler. Chris was also instrumental in starting a new venture for the congress which was the commentary room. This buzzed for the whole tournament and I for one learnt a lot. It also became the hub of the production of a bulletin including the inputting of all the Open games to Fritz and commentary on some. This was a great effort from a number of people including some of the players.

The open was won by John Piggot who as far as we could see in the commentary room (assisted by Fritz!) wasn't losing any of his games at any point. His classy positional style caused headaches in the commentary room as we rushed from one side of the board to another checking all sorts of tactics that were threatened but not always carried out. They were mostly rejected at the expense of further classy positional moves! This was highly educational for some of the younger visitors to the commentary room and most of us too! Chris did a great job in leading the discussions most of the time but the demo board wasn't out of bounds to the youngsters. They frequently took up the role of teacher. Rarely can St Edwards have seen such a democratic teaching style!? But what a great school and venue and we have to give special thanks to St Edwards teacher John Wheeler for his polite, entusiastic and patient help.

Thanks also to the players (mostly vastly stronger than us in the commentary room) who took our "Fritz assisted" bombshells with great dignity! Certain players impressed with their cheerfulness in defeat and willingness to analyse their mistakes with us weaklings! One such, who played some great chess, had a brilliant game late in the tournament. More on this, and the interesting loss and brilliant win, both of which he helped us analyse, when the games are on site.

Also great thanks to David Tipper from Bristol webmaster of the Bristol and District League Website www.chessit.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk who is currently inputting ALL the games from the premier section. All games will be on this website asap, probably around 6th June as your webmaster is away camping in Wales till then and I don't have a laptop to update this site in a tent at the foot of Snowdon. David also provided some of the excellent photos on this page. See them all at his website.
