Here is Duncan's draw with Nigel Hoskens from our recent away match with
Rooks.
1. e4 A short but complicated game. Black puts lots of pressure on White and White gives up material to try and get dynamic play as compensation for his crumbling centre. In the finalk line there was just enough play to enable liquidation into a drawn ending.
1... d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 c6 4. f4 Qa5 instantly putting pressure on white's centre
5. Bd3 e5 and more pressur e! On playing 4. f4 I already felt I was committed to gambiting a pawn - either the d4 pawn or the b2 pawn depending on Black's choices in the next few moves. White has good development as some compensation.
6. Nf3 Bg4 7. Be3 exf4 8. Bxf4 Qb6 9. O-O Bxf3 10. Qxf3 Qxd4+ 11. Be3 Qb4 White does have good development but Black can consolidate very quickly with Nd7 covering e5.
12. a3 Qa5 13. e5 dxe5 second pawn to secure the e5 square, open lines for the bishops and prevent Black from settling on e5 with his knight when he does get Nbd7 in. A good investment for one pawn but still White is now 2 pawns down without tangible lines.
14. Ne4 Nbd7 15. Rad1 Be7 if 15. ... O-O-O then Ng5 is good for white
16. Ng5 Bc5 h6 looks logica l but fails to a Nxf7 sacrifice - Fritz analyses this to a win. To be fair in the game I was thinking of playing Bf5 after h6 which is more drawish.
16... h6 17. Nxf7 Kxf7 18. Qh5+ Kg8 19. Bc4+ Kh7 20. Qf5+ g6 21. Qh3
17. Bf5! Bxe3+ 18. Qxe3 Qb6 leading to a forced draw - 18. ... Nb6 gives Black more chances to play for a win
19. Bxd7+ Nxd7 20. Qxb6 Nxb6 21. Nxf7 O-O 22. Nxe5 1/2-1/2
